Whilst Kickstarter itself is a genuine site and has helped crowdfund some interesting and appealing projects. there are many many who see the platform as an easy platform to scam gullible and not-so-gullible backers. I have backed about 300 projects on Kickstarter (and Indiegogo). Many are awesomely good and have made huge efforts to honour those who pledged support. However I have lost many thousands of dollars. Some fail in their project - that is a legitimate reason to lose money, after all crowdfunding is a form of venture capital. However there have been a number of projects that have sucked up $1-2 million in fundings and then just vanished. Kickstarter's only response was to add their disclaimer to the backing pledge. Interestingly watches seem to have been a safe bet - but I.T. has been VERY risky.

BEWARE and don't back anything unless you can afford to lose the funds.
