I completed a survey for Screwfix, they stated I would receive a 'free' mini tool kit for completing the survey. I had to pay £1.71 for postage and pacing which I stupidly did. Ourhomearea then proceeded to take £42.34 from my account at fortnightly intervals. I have managed to get the money back from the bank apart from the first payment which apparently I had consented to. The telephone number the bank gave me in order to speak to Ourhomearea 01610200112 does not exist.

The same thing has just happened to me with Ourhomearea. I completed an online Sainsburys survey this morning (which in hindsight wasn't an online Sainsbury's survey) and paid 2 euros for postage for an item. I ended up being signed up to an Ouhomearea membership scheme which wanted to charge me 50 Euros in 3 days time and every few weeks after that. No option to "Skip the next top up" (payment) as they suggest you are able to, via your account, in the e-mail they send you.

I went online with an Ourhomearea chat agent who was of little help and had to email their support account (support@ourhomearea.com ) and cancelled the contract with ourhomearea immediately. Ourhomearea acknowledged the e-mail I sent and assured me I should not be charged anything further. We'll see!

I also spoke to my credit card company who said once you have e-mailed them canceling the contract, then no further charges should be made by them otherwise they are breaking your cancellation request. Keep any e-mails as proof and if you are charged further then you can claim them back from the credit card company by raising a dispute.

The credit card company said it's called "piggy backing". You think you are signing up for one thing (a bargain) and you can end up out of pocket by paying for credits which you can supposedly spend on their website. The credit card company advised checking the address of the sender and any website link on the initial e-mail to see if it looks legitimate by pasting them into... Read more
